Downtown Markham

Downtown Markham is a 9-million square foot mixed-use city centre where townhomes and condominiums will be a short walk from jobs, stores, restaurants and other attractions. The $2.25-billion development began in late 2004 and will take more than 20 years to complete.

The most intensive, compact and active area within Markham Centre — the town's designated area to accommodate future growth, Downtown Markham's 243 acres, will provide housing for about 4,000 residents and jobs for about 16,000 office and retail employees.

There will be no strip plazas or internal malls in Downtown Markham. Buildings will be placed close to the sidewalk to create an active urban environment and lively street life day and night. All of  Downtown Markham will be well served by public transit.

The Civic Mall is a defining feature of Downtown Markham. A park-like grand allee that runs east-west the length of the development, it will also accommodate future York Region rapid transit service to the Unionville GO Station.

Residents are just a stroll from all of the attractions of the downtown core. In Downtown Markham there are no single-family homes, only townhomes and mid-rise condominiums. This provides the density necessary to justify pubic transit while respecting the Markham's existing small-town flavour.
