About Georgetown

Georgetown is a community situated on the Credit River in the town of Halton Hills, nestled in rolling hills and lush woodlands.  Georgetown is noted for its rich cultural history, small-town charm, and access to a wide range of outdoor recreational activities.

The community takes its name from settler George Kennedy, who arrived in 1821 and built a sawmill near 10th line, around which a small settlement developed.  The name “Georgetown” was adopted in 1837.

Georgetown grew as new neighbourhoods were added around the original neighbourhood of Main Street and Church Street.  King Street and Queen Street were developed as the railway arrived.  The Delrex subdivision built in the 1950s, followed by Moore Park in 1962 and Barber Glen in 1968.  In 1974, the community amalgamated with the Town of Acton and most of the Township of Esquesing to form the Town of Halton Hills, part of the newly-formed Regional Municipality of Halton.  The Georgetown South subdivision was built in 1989 on the farmland south of Silver Creek, and since then, the Arbour Glen, Stewart’s Mills and the Four Corners developments have been added.

Population growth in Georgetown has attracted industrial growth as well. Companies with offices and facilities in Georgetown include Mold-Masters Limited, CPI Canada, Nelson Dairy, Cooper Standard, Archer Daniels Midland Cocoa, and Howmet Georgetown Casting.

Historic downtown Georgetown features galleries, spas, museums, and eclectic coffee and tea shops.  A farmers’ market is held on Main Street on Saturday mornings from June to October, with the street closed to automobile traffic.  Georgetown Marketplace is the community’s major shopping centre, with over 60 stores including WalMart, Zellers, Winners and HomeSense.

Georgetown offers spectacular hiking opportunities for nature lovers.  The Bruce Trail runs north of the community, and the Town of Halton Hills is developing a multipurpose trail system for hikers and cyclists, taking advantage of historic railbeds.  Favourite local annual events include the Georgetown Highland Games on the second Saturday in June, host to a variety of traditional Scottish games and celebrations, and the Georgetown Fall Fair, held the weekend after Labour Day by Georgetown Agricultural Society at the Georgetown Fairgrounds.  The Fair features carnival rides and rural contests including a tractor pull and demolition derby.
