Brampton enjoys its reputation as a thriving and active community. The third-largest city in the Greater Toronto Area, it boasts a diverse population of more than 500,000, a multicultural mosaic that represents more than 175 distinct ethnic backgrounds. This diversity can be experienced in a wide selection of restaurants, boutiques, festivals, arts events, museums, and recreational opportunities.
From its early days with a thriving greenhouse industry that earned the nickname the Flower City, what was a primarily rural area 150 years ago has been transformed by consumer growth and commercial development into a dynamic community that mixes history with modern infrastructure. Brampton recently reasserted its reputation as the Flower City by showcasing some of the province’s most innovative and beautiful flowerbeds and floral displays, winning the International award in 2008’s Communities in Bloom Competition.
Brampton's economic sectors have diversified to include advanced manufacturing, retail administration and logistics, information and communication technologies, food and beverage, life sciences and business services. It houses the national headquarters of several major corporations, including Loblaw Companies, HBC/Zellers, Bacardi, Brita, and Clorox.
With a focus on responsible growth and community engagement, Brampton has also built a reputation as a global leader in community safety, becoming, in 2007, the first city in the Greater Toronto Area and one of only ten in North America to earn designation as an International Safe Community by the World Health Organization.
